A follow up: the 'make install' process seems to be busted: To begin with, fontconfig/config/install.sh untarred as non-executable, but it seems like it should be executable. Other errors crop up, but they seem to point to this being the root cause. Are there other build instructions out there? The INSTALL is rather brief.
